Why Going Meatless for Just One Day a Week Can Change the World

Not everyone is going to be vegan.

I believe in the movement, and I would genuinely love to see us thrive in a plant based society, but we’ve got to be realistic here.

Many of us are too stuck in our ways, have a negative preconceived notion of veganism, or are simply not well off enough to support a vegan lifestyle.

Whatever the case may be, telling someone they need to give up all consumption of animal products is inevitably going to go in through one ear and out the other.

But if you tell them they need to give up all consumption of animal products for just one day a week, you might have a different outcome.

But for what incentive?

Tell them they’ll change the world.

Sure, you’ll do wonders for your health, from weight loss to lowering your risk of cancer to improving heart functionality. But what you will do for your very own environment is even more impactful.

According to earthday.org, if the entire U.S. did not eat meat or cheese for just one day a week, it would be the equivalent of not driving 91 billion miles – or taking 7.6 million cars off the road. Thats insane!

But forget about the entire U.S., what about just you?

Well, an estimated 1,800 to over 4,000 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Imagine the amount of water you’d be saving by going just a single day without it. There’s a lot of thirsty people on this planet that could benefit from that, not to mention a thirsty earth.

And what about the energy you’re saving? The amount it takes to produce one ¼ lb. of beef is about the equivalent needed to power your iPhone for 6 months.

From a significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions to the destruction of our natural forests, it’s almost hard to believe that so much can come from the simple decision to avoid eating a cheeseburger or some chicken wings on Mondays.

Plus, at the end of the day, people love challenges. There’s actually fun found in trying to navigate your day around meals that are completely meatless, especially if you’re a frequent meat eater.

It brings to light how much meat you actually consume, and can even motivate you to go from a meatless Monday to a meatless Wednesday and Friday as well. Your body genuinely feels better when you’re eating plant based, and feeling good through a proper diet is the best kind of addiction. Especially when you know you’re saving the planet in the process.

And on the days you do decide to eat meat, opt for the sustainably raised fish and grass-feed beef, which can actually be beneficial to the environment.
